The Power of The Pen

On Monday, I showcased prolific Christian writer Frank Peretti.

What I didn’t expect to find (on his Facebook page) was his September 2016 letter to the Washington State Attorney General. Urging him to reconsider his legal case against florist Barronelle Stutzman.

The florist whose case I showcased here on May 30, 2018 and June 25, 2018.  AND

Frank posted his letter with the expressed hope that “these questions will spread and folks will pause to consider them.” It is in this spirit that I share excerpts from his letter here.

My main focus is Outcome. Certainly, we all want equality and respect for every human being… But should you prevail in your case against Stutzman, will the Outcome be the best one to serve such ideals?

… you have the winning hand in this matter and all the power you need to destroy Stutzman should you prevail. The catch is, you do not have the power to change her, which means the only Outcome will be her ruin and destruction… Is this the Outcome you really want? Will it serve your purpose?

Let me offer three factors that affect Stutzman’s thinking and… establish her very identity, which is to say, they are invariable; she will not veer from them:

1) She believes the Bible to be the actual Word of God.

2) She is devoted to Jesus Christ as the Divine Son of God, and therefore believes what He taught in the Bible — in this case, what He taught about marriage.

3) She, like most Christians, rests on 2000 years of martyr tradition. I assure you, the 2000 years of history of Christians being martyred for their faith has not been lost on today’s Christians. They remember the lions, the burnings at the stake, the dungeons, the Inquisition… the crucifixions, beheadings… and now, of course, the slaughter of Christians by ISIS…

All of these examples have one thing in common; one party… trying to change the religious convictions of Christians by brute force. Please note: the Christians did not change, they died, and this fact has not been wasted on the defendant.

Consequently, since Barronelle and Christians like her are not going to surrender their convictions, all you can expect is to join the ranks of… others who accomplished nothing more than the destruction of human beings for their religious faith.

[If you do this…]

Have you made the world a better place by destroying another human being?

Will it be to your credit that you destroyed the life of a peace loving, gay loving, flower arranging grandmother because of her religious convictions?

Will equality, acceptance, and tolerance be accomplished by destroying an individual and, by that precedent, empowering one group to destroy another?

Is this the America we want? Is this who we are?

Is this how you wish to be remembered?

So says Frank Peretti.

What say you?
