Divine Appointments in Unlikely Places

Thanks to You, Lord, we saved a life today!

But only — only — because You sent us to the Right Place at the Right Time!

We have resumed our favorite bicycle ride near our house here.  A scenic ride along a beautiful river.  A narrow, tree-lined road without much traffic.  We cover the eight-plus miles four to six times a week.

We love one part of the route so much — Bohannon Road — You prompted us to join the “Friends of Bohannon” who “adopted” the road to keep it clean of trash.

First, we had to track them down.  With a little sleuthing, and a lot of guidance from You, we found their leader.  We are now officially the Newest Friends!   🙂

We had our first group clean-up last weekend.  Right before the “tailgate” party (a.k.a., pot luck lunch) we hosted, twelve of us gathered at 11:00 AM and cleaned — I mean, cleaned — the two-mile route.

How long did that last, Lord?  Two days?

For the past three days, we have ridden our bikes past a bunch of broken styrofoam.  Someone’s abandoned cooler, smashed by car traffic?  Today, we couldn’t stand it anymore.  After our bike ride, we drove back to pick it all up.

That’s when we saw him.

A fish, trapped in the shallows at the riverbank… next to the styrofoam.  It was on its side. We thought it was dead.  Then its gill moved.  We climbed down, picked it up and tossed it into the river.

It floated on its side for a full minute… then started to move.  Another minute went by.  It slowly righted itself in the water.  After another minute, it swam off… fully revived!

What a great feeling, Lord!

We don’t know how or when that fish got trapped.  We never would have seen it if we hadn’t gone to pick up the trash.  If we hadn’t gone today, it would not have survived.

Isn’t that a lot like Life, Lord?

We see a mess.  For awhile, we pass by it… until we can’t stand it anymore.  We feel compelled to do something about it.

So we do…  and discover a Divine appointment.  An opportunity to make a real difference in someone’s life.  Maybe even a lifesaving difference.

I know.  In the overall scheme of things, a fish is not that important.  Or is it?

Haven’t I heard the same said about some people?  Who are we just passing by… without even realizing it?

“I now realize how true it is that God does not show favoritism but accepts from every nation the one who fears Him and does what is right… God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and power, and… He went around doing good and healing all who were under the power of the devil, because God was with Him.”  (Acts 10:34-35,38)

Help me be more sensitive to Your heart promptings, Lord!  More sensitive… and more obedient.

I don’t want to miss a single “fish” You have “assigned” to me.   🙂
