When I look at the evening news, I can feel the enemy’s temptation to despair.  So much of what I see happening in the world is unprecedented.  It is a new day and the weather outlook seems to be violent storms on every horizon. Israel was reborn as a nation — reestablished as a Jewish state — just a few years before I was born.  Now, after more than 60 years of unequivocal support for Israel, our most senior leaders in the Executive Branch are appeasing our enemies and spurning Israel to the point of threatening the withdrawal of our nation’s financial, military and political support of this key ally. Like I… Read more »

You must be “up to” something, Lord… because I remembered something I haven’t thought about in years. It was a commercial for a Winter Olympics of long ago.  The ski jumper had lost his balance on the downhill slope and, traveling at breakneck speeds (literally), crashed into (and over) the barricade alongside the ski jump and hurled down the mountain slope like a rag doll.  And all the commentator could say was:  “The Thrill of Victory and the Agony of Defeat.” Today was “full to overflowing” with some of each. The Thrill of Victory — the amazing conversations I had with two precious sisters-in-Christ, sisters I met only recently.  They… Read more »

Sometimes — Often? Always? — You something amazing, Lord… to express the magnitude of Your Love for us.  Then, You go above and beyond that amazing thing… as if You aren’t satisfied to just punctuate it with a “period,” because it demands an “exclamation point”!   Not because You must… but because You can! Like yesterday. I received a gift from a dear, newly-found sister-in-Christ:  Cathy Rodgers, from Savannah.  She has just published a book called “A Life Course of Miracles & Prayer:  Supernatural Events in Ordinary Lives.”  It is a collection of miracles that occurred to people in her own family.  Stories shared with her by her aunt.  Stories that could only… Read more »

A broken piece of soap.  A resounding expression of LOVE. Some people think a “Miracle” must be a “Blind Man Given Sight” kind of thing…. or a “Dead Man Brought to Life.”  I have not seen a miracle of that kind (with my natural eyes).  But I have seen many, many, of what I call the “Everyday Miracles” that You, Lord, so generously impart. One definition of Miracle:  “An effect or extraordinary event in the physical world that surpasses all known human or natural powers and is ascribed to a supernatural cause” (dictionary.reference.com).  Yep… even Your Everyday Miracles, Lord! This morning, I finished reading an historical novel written by a man… Read more »

How do I put You into words, Lord, when words cannot possibly capture the wonder — the magnitude — of You??? “”The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands… They have no speech, they use no words; no sound is heard from them.  Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.”  (Psalm 19:1-4b) A couple pulled their car into our driveway this morning.  They are the daughter and son-in-law of a dear neighbor.  We had not seen them in at least a year.  Then, today of all days, they drove into our driveway.  They had… Read more »

I discovered a new “sense” today… all because of You, Lord.  It’s just been that kind of day. I am quite fond of the five senses You have given us — each one a priceless Gift.  To SEE countless shapes, textures and colors that take our breath away as they produce spectacular beauty.  To HEAR rich sounds that convey rich meaning — the whispers, the music, the cries, the words that deeply touch (and move) our hearts and souls.  To SMELL fragrances that awaken our emotions and aromas that awaken our appetites.  To TASTE what nourishes and delights us.  To FEEL what gives us comfort. So what was this new “sense?”  I call it the Sense of SQUISH…. Read more »

I have often asked You, Lord, to not let my hours of sleep be only for my rest.  To also use them as my classroom if You had something important to teach me. Last night, school was in session. I was dreaming.  I was at a memorial service for someone I had loved dearly.  There was some confusion about the service itself — who would be doing what… almost as if it were being planned on the spot. It was also clear I was being given some authority to decide what would be done or not done.  Someone brought up a particular church “doctrine,” offering to have a man she… Read more »

Leadership training for squirrels???  I wouldn’t have believed it, if I hadn’t seen it with my own eyes! For many years now, we have enjoyed watching birds of many kinds and colors partake of a tasty feast from our bird feeder out front.  It hangs from a spot on a tree limb far away from the tree trunk.  A spot we thought was well outside the physical capacity of any squirrel that might consider a leap. Our theory proved to be true for many years.  Until we encountered a squirrel of faith — faith as small as a bird seed. “Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small… Read more »

What an amazing gift it is, Lord, when You give us “eyes” to see beyond The Veil. There is a Reality all around us.  A Reality we usually cannot see with our natural eyes.  Our five senses will only take us so far.  We who are people of Faith know there is more — so much more — than we can see, hear, smell, taste and touch.  That “So Much More Place” where You are, Lord… along with Your angelic hosts and the enemies with whom they battle.  We know it because You have said so, Lord.  And we take You at Your Word. “Now faith is confidence in what… Read more »

Oh, Abba… Sometimes You answer my prayers so quickly, You take my breath away!  How is it, then, that I can so totally miss The Answer… even when it is staring me right in the face? This morning, our time together was sweet.  I can’t even totally reconstruct how my “heart talk” with You went.  Sometimes, there is just a sense of being and knowing that what passes between us is real and deep and beautiful.  I do remember one thing.  I remember asking You to help my heart beat as Yours does.  I asked You to break my heart with whatever breaks Your heart. My prayer was genuine, not lip service.  You answered… Read more »
