The Company We Keep

Sometimes, I have no clue about what I’m going to write until I sit down at my computer. Like today, when I am to write about Kingdom POWER… and consider what we can learn from Christian business owners who are seeking to reflect His Light in the marketplace.

This morning, as I prayed about Kingdom POWER, a Scripture came to mind: “Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for He who promised is faithful. And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another — and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”  (Hebrews 10:23-25)

Sounds like a great formula for Kingdom POWER… Amen?

So I did a Google search — “Christian Business Owners Association.” And an interesting link popped up. Full Disclosure: I know nothing about this particular group, no one who is a member. But the concept is informative of what some Christian business owners are doing, it seems to me, in the spirit of Hebrews 10:23-25.

The Christian Business Fellowship Association (CBFA) in Texas states this core mission: To provide a business network that encourages Christian values. “24 Hour Christians in Business, At Home, and In the Community.”   https://www.thecbfa.com/

The President, Delisle Doherty, shares his heart about CBFA: “As a business owner, I recognize a need for a Christian business network. It is important for the public to know there is a coalition of businesses that conduct their business on a Christian foundation. It became a dream to provide that venue. It is our shared faith in Christ that will help us to turn this dream into a reality.”  https://www.thecbfa.com/about-us/

I counted 91 members. Each member has a profile of their businesses on the website — not only for the benefit of other members (for networking purposes), but also for the benefit of the public (for advertising purposes).

Yearly membership fees are set at $250.00 for businesses and $125.00 for non-profits. Apparently, members in each local chapter (there are several) gather at monthly lunch meetings and special events.

They provide networking and sharing of information with practical business application… and also spiritual exhortation. Patrick Howard (one of the members, I assume) writes what appears to be a monthly blog. Like this one, posing a provocative question: “So you think you wear too many hats? Look at how many Jesus Wore.”   https://www.thecbfa.com/think-wear-many-hats/

Again… I know nothing about these particular brothers and sisters. Only that they lift up the name of Jesus… and are seeking to spur one another on and encourage each other to live by faith in the marketplace. And, if they’re at least as serious about succeeding in their business faith walk as they are about growing their bottom line, isn’t that HUGE?

What do you think?

Are similar organizations active in your area?

If not, would you help start one?
