Why Not Just Send Money?

The departure day for our eight-day mission trip is fast approaching.  Someone else is planning and coordinating the logistics of mobilizing our 41-person team from four different states to help make sure we all end up in the Right Place at the Right Time.

Yikes!

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”  (Philippians 4:4-7)

Maybe the question that surfaced was inevitable, given the magnitude of this effort.

“It’s costing so much money to send so many people.  Why don’t you just send that money to the mission field instead of all those people?”

There’s some logic behind that question.  Money certainly could be helpful to those we will be serving.  It’s a means to reaching certain ends.  Ends that have some value.  But after all is said and done, that’s all money is — a means to reaching certain ends.

But You, Lord?  You are the only “End” worth reaching.  And that makes You the real treasure!  A priceless Treasure that cannot be found in any paper or coin currency… no matter how big the “stash” might be.

Because You don’t inhabit money.  By Your own choice, Lord, You inhabit people.

“If you love Me, keep My commands.  And I will ask the Father, and He will give you another Advocate to help you and be with you forever — the Spirit of Truth… you know Him, for He lives with you and will be in you.  I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.”  (John 14:15-18)

That’s why you’re sending us… isn’t it, Lord?  So You can do much more through us than would ever be possible through mere cold currency.

“But we have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.”  (2 Corinthians 4:7)

“Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever!”  (Ephesians 3:20)

Oh, Lord… That’s our prayer!  That You will not only send us, but spend us… for Your Glory!

Expectantly,

Abba’s Girl
