Who Would Bet On Just A 5% Chance?

“For better, for worse; for richer, for poorer; in sickness and in health; till death do us part.”

Isn’t that what most couples vow to each other, Lord, when they begin their married life? It’s a beautiful and precious sentiment.

But what if Life makes them later “eat” their words?  In ways that leave them choking?

What happens when the “better” has faded to indifference?  Or when there’s plenty of money, but the “Love Account” has been overdrawn?

What happens when a couple’s apparently healthy “glow” has become just a cover-up for tumors of resentment and bitterness?  What if feelings that once held two people together are now on life support?

Who would bet on a marriage, Lord, if the very ones who vowed “forever” now predict only a 5% chance of survival?

I encountered a woman today in that very place.  She could have already been divorced by now, but she isn’t.  Things have been happening to slow that “train” down.

Unexpected things.

You’re up to something… aren’t You, Lord?

“Haven’t you read… that at the beginning the Creator made them male and female, and said, ‘For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be united to his wife, and the two will become one flesh.  So they are no longer two, but one flesh.  Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”  (Matthew 19:4-6)

It had seemed like that “train” had left the station, with no hope of turning back.

Until today.

Now, there’s a radical question hanging in the air…

“Would you be willing to take divorce off the table, just for a season?  So you can really seek the Lord about this in a way you haven’t before?  So you can turn your mind and your heart to Him and ask Him what He wants you to do?”

I know what You want her answer to be, Lord.  Even she knows what You want her answer to be.  But how does she jump off this “train,” when she has already packed her emotional bags and purchased a one-way ticket?

“Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.”  (Matthew 19:26)

Even raising the dead to LIFE.

As we ended our time together, You gave me two questions to ask her.  Questions about getting off this “train”… even for awhile.

Rhetorical, “food for thought” questions.  Without any expectation of an answer today.

“What do you have to lose?”   AND   “What might you have to gain?”

She’s thinking, Lord.  And as she does, I’m fighting on my knees for her in prayer.

She’s desperate for your help, Lord… even more than she realizes.  So I’m asking You — by faith — to move mightily on her behalf.  And I’m thanking You now for the answers to that prayer that are already on the way!

“This is the confidence we have in approaching God:  that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.  And if we know that He hears us — whatever we ask — we know that we have what we asked of Him.”  (1 John 5:14-15)

Praying (and praising) without ceasing.
