What If Leaves Were Wind Chimes?

The skies were pale grey this morning.  Or, at least, the dense cloud cover was.  All the better to see the “wind chimes” You had placed forty feet off the ground, Lord.

Two tall trees, side-by-side.  One… a beech?  The other, a poplar with its distinctive leaves. The beech stood stately and still.  But the poplar?  A cool breeze was stirring its leaves into shimmering motion.

And I wondered:  What if leaves were wind chimes?

Their tones varying by… Their shapes and sizes?  Their assigned location in the orchestra — from low to high in the air space?  The amount of sap in their veins?

What “melodies” were resonating outside this morning?  I actually went out to check.

I was almost disappointed when I didn’t hear wind chimes.  Almost.  Because I heard the masterpiece You had orchestrated, Lord… instead of the one I had just imagined!

The choir almost overpowered the instruments.  How many birds had You assembled, Lord?  Hundreds?  All of them giving You glory with their very individual songs of praise!

All separate… but in sync.  Amazing!

Each solo beautiful… but the whole choir?  Breathtaking!

I had to listen hard — really lean in — to hear the instrumentation You had created as back-up to the choir.  And when I did, there it was.  Undemanding… yet unmistakable. Subtle… yet stunning.

It was so hard to hear at first.  Yet once I heard it, I couldn’t keep myself from hearing it!

Weird, huh?

Yet isn’t that just like Life, Lord?  Sometimes we have to listen hard — really lean in — to hear You.  Even when we are surrounded by so much Beauty.  Perhaps especially then…

… when our need for You may seem less apparent in the presence of so much Blessing.

“Choose My instruction instead of silver, knowledge rather than choice gold, for Wisdom is more precious than rubies, and nothing you desire can compare with her.”  (Proverbs 8:10-11)

Has anyone ever called You “weird,” Lord?  You know how I mean it… don’t You, Abba? “Weird” in the wildest and most wonderful ways!  The most unexpected and undeniable ways!  The most mysterious and majestic ways!

All the ways that keep the Love we share with each other so vibrant and thrilling and joyful and fresh… every single day!

“You will go out in joy and be led forth in peace; the mountains and hills will burst into song before you, and all the trees of the field will clap their hands… This will be for the Lord’s renown, for an everlasting sign, that will endure forever.”  (Isaiah 55:12-13)

Sighing as I sing with Your choir today,

Abba’s Girl
