Solomon, the wisest king on earth, once said: “There is nothing new under the sun” (Ecclesiastes 1:9)
He hadn’t been fishing with us! 🙂 And he never had the privilege of meeting You, Lord, in the same say we have.
With You, Jesus — THE SON — everything is new!
“See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it?” (Isaiah 43:19)
“Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!” (2 Corinthians 5:17)
We went fishing yesterday, in search of Our Spot. A place we discovered where fish like to hide out. We found Our Spot and found something else we hadn’t expected. The fish had developed “hiding” into an art form.
Undaunted, we were preparing to head out again today. We thought we might go to Our Spot again.
But then, You showed up, Lord!
“I’m going out to fish,’ Simon Peter told them, and they said, ‘We’ll go with you.’ So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing. Early in the morning, Jesus stood on the shore… He called out to them, “Friends, haven’t you caught any fish?’ ‘No,’ they answered. He said, ‘Throw your net on the right side of the boat and you will find some.’ When they did, they were unable to haul the net in because of the large number of fish.” (John 21:3-6)
We didn’t see You on the dock this morning, Lord. But You might as well have been there… guiding our efforts, like You did for those fishermen so long ago!
We went to a different place. At a different time. On a different tide.
We didn’t net 153 fish like Your disciples did. But just thirty minutes from our departure… FISH ON!!! A beautiful speckled sea trout! Thirty minutes later… FISH ON!!! An impressive black grouper! Thirty minutes later… FISH ON!!! Our largest mangrove snapper ever! Thirty minutes later… FISH ON!!! An even larger speckled sea trout!
And yes… The biggest one got away! I hooked a massive fish! Its size was obvious by the bend in the rod and the power with which it took the line and ran against the drag. Not to mention, the three times it jumped out of the water! Then… YIKES!!! It cut the line with its gills, taking the whole rig — hook, shrimp and float — with it!
Oh, well… Yummy fresh fish dinners for the next 2-3 nights?! FUN, FUN, FUN in the SUN (SON)?! What’s not to like?!
On a scale of one to ten? I’d say… Today’s been a TWELVE, Lord!!! And it’s only mid-afternoon… !!!
Of course, after the disciples’ fish “encounter” so long ago, You asked one key question and gave two key commands.
“Do you love Me?” (John 21:17)
“Feed My sheep.” (John 21:17)
“Follow Me.” (John 21:19)
Food for the stomach. Food for the mind. Food for the spirit.
Mouthwatering feasts, all three… Amen?
