Too Good to Be True…

The Wisdom of The Ages:  If something sounds too good to be true, it usually is.

I downloaded some free client-development material yesterday.  It was written by a coach who makes a seven-figure annual income.  He claims to be the highest paid coach on earth.

The material he shared includes some of what he has learned about where to find clients and how to communicate with them in ways that result in a mutually-beneficial coaching relationsihp.  I skimmed the material, which looked valuable (at least on some level).  The email included a link to a free webinar, during which this coach promised to go into more detail on these topics.  So I signed up.

The webinar was today.  I could relate to some of the challenges in his childhood.  A single mom with financial struggles.  Growing up wearing hand-me-downs.  Feelings of inferiority.  He spoke of his early days as a coach, when clients paid him less than $200 per month.  Now, he only works with clients who will contract to work with him for a minimum of one year, at $20,000 per month.

That’s when my antenna went up.  I wondered:  What kind of coaching is he doing that commands that kind of commitment and fee?

There was some valuable information in the webinar.  It, of course, led up to his “offer” — more indepth training and some bonus offerings for $2,000.  What he was offering sounded really good to me — some very practical, results-oriented tools that could be very helpful in my work with current and prospective clients.

Or was it the ringing in my ears that sounded good — the potential “cha-ching” of the high earnings he was promising?

He was offering a 30-day, money-back guarantee.  Pay now and try the online training for 30 days.  If I don’t like it, he’ll refund the money.  How could I possibly lose?   Immediately, You answered me — whispering a simple instruction that showed me how very vital that question was.  You whispered:  “Google him.”  So I did.

It took me another hour of reading articles about him and listening to him before I finally honed in on his “secrets” — the specific tools he uses with those high-end clients, so they will want to pay him the “big bucks.”  The tools imparted to him by “angels” and “spirit guides” through the laying on of hands.  The “evolution” his clients will achieve as they “become” angels and spirit guides by “mastering” these tools.  Tools that can be used to find out “real life secrets” and uncover “what’s true” for life.

There was no mention of You, Lord.  Only concepts like “envisioning” and “attracting” and “manifesting” what we and our clients want… spoken in words that could just as easily have been spoken in the Garden of Eden.

“Is there anything of which one can say, ‘Look!  This is something new’?  It was here already, long ago; it was here before our time.”  (Ecclesiastes 1:10)

Promises, promises.  Lots of money.  Revelation of secrets, of hidden knowledge.  The ability to literally “suck the venom” out of clients.  Development of psychic abilities.  And more…

“What good is it for someone to gain the whole world, yet forfeit their soul?”  (Mark 8:36)

This coach says he doesn’t understand how the techniques he uses work.  He only knows they do, and “you can’t argue with results.”  What if the results go beyond what you bargained for?

“… Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light.  It is not surprising, then, if his servants also masquerade as servants of righteousness.  Their end will be what their actions deserve.”  (2 Corinthians 11:14-15)

I’m praying for this dear man tonight, Lord… that Your mercy may abound in his life.  He is so rich in the things of this world… and so poor in what really matters.  He clearly doesn’t know You, yet.  And yet, I know You love him with the same everlasting love You have for me.  I know You will relentlessly pursue him while he still has breath and there is still hope.

Paul (formerly Saul of Tarsus) was a coach long before any of us… wasn’t he, Lord?  Could there be any coaching advice more valuable than what You inspired him to offer?

“… whatever is true… noble… right… pure… lovely… admirable — if anything is excellent or praiseworthy — think about such things.  Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me — put it into practice.  And the God of peace will be with you.”  (Philippians 4:8-9)

Thank You, Lord, for helping me hear Your Voice today… so I could stay on solid ground.

“Live as children of light (for the fruit of the light consists in all goodness, righteousness and truth) and find out what pleases the Lord… Be very careful, then, how you live — not as unwise but as wise, making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.  Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord’s will is… Sing and make music from your heart to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”  (Ephesians 5:8b-10,15-17,19b-20)

Gratefully,

Abba’s Girl
