The Sweet Sound of Silence!

I heard the most wonderful story in church today, Lord.  A true story… with Great Truths!

Back in the early days of aviation, a pilot was making a round-the-world flight.  About two hours into the latest leg of his journey, he heard the noise those early pilots dreaded.

The gnawing of a rat.  It must have stowed away during his last fuel stop.

The fact that it was there wasn’t the problem.  The Problem was what it could be gnawing. Was it a vital cable?  Something that could affect the pilot’s ability to control the plane? This could be disastrous!  And there was no way for the pilot to know.

Talk about a “Catch 22”!  He was two hours away from his last landing field and more than two hours away from the next.  If ever there was a time to “freak out”… it was then!  But instead of a meltdown, he had a Moment of Clarity.

I wonder, Lord… Did he know You?

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.  And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”  (Philippians 4:6-7)

He remembered the rat is a rodent. If it had been made for high altitude, it would have had wings. Instead, it was an Earth-dweller.  In a moment of Divine inspiration, the pilot began to climb away from Earth.

Up, up and up.  One thousand feet.  Then another.  Then another.  He leveled off when he was over 20,000 feet up.  Where he heard the sound that was music to his ears…

The Sweet Sound of Silence!

The gnawing had ceased.  It could mean only one thing:  The rat must be dead!

Great Truth #1:  Rats should stick to mountain climbing.  Or maybe desert dwelling.

Rats cannot survive in heavenly atmospheres.  The pilot arrived at the next landing field more than two hours later.  He found just what he expected to find:  A dead rat.

Great Truth #2:  Worry is a lot like a rat.

Worry cannot survive in heavenly atmospheres.  When we soak in Your Presence, Lord, and in Your Word, we are lifted above our worries.  Into Your very Throne Room. Where we can get A Different Perspective — Your Perspective, Lord.

Even when our troubles have not yet been resolved.

Your Throne Room is a place where we can find Supernatural Peace.  Peace that defies our circumstances.

Your Throne Room is a place where we can get Clarity.  Clarity that helps us find The Way where there is no way.

“‘Jesus answered, ‘I am The Way and The Truth and The Life.  No one comes to the Father except through Me.'”  (John 14:6)

“Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.”  (Hebrews 4:16)

The Sweet Sound of Silence… where we can really hear.

Learning to listen,
