The One That DIDN’T Get Away!

Oh, Lord… You were — are — a Fisherman like no other!  I couldn’t help but remember this priceless Truth yesterday… when the MONSTER bass on my hook leaped out of the water!!!

I have never — NEVER — had such a HUGE large-mouth bass on my hook!  I think I was more surprised than he was.  When he first took the hook — and I set it — I thought he was just another typical bass.

Until he dove… and then yanked… and then shot out the water like he had wings!  Trying to throw the hook.  Trying unsuccessfully.   🙂

Where was our net???  Where was our net???  Not in the boat, as it turned out.  Who would have dreamed I would ever have hooked such a record setter???

I reeled him in, close to the boat.  So, he ducked under the boat.  Then, he bolted for the thick grass. Emphasis on the word thick.

You knew all along what was coming… didn’t You, Lord?

We let the boat drift slowly toward where he was hiding.  My life partner — who doubles as my favorite and most excellent fishing guide — was holding onto the line near the surface of the water.  Gently trying to coax him out of that thick grass.  When suddenly…

… the line snapped.   🙁   The grass wasn’t just thick… it was sharp.  My prize was GONE.  Major BUMMER!!!

I was like that bass once… wasn’t I, Lord?   🙂

I, too, once had a large mouth.  A mouth that said some not-so-kind things about You.  I didn’t know You back then.

Then, one day, I got hooked.  By You.  For You.  And it was a VERY GOOD THING.

Over the years, I have done my sharing of fighting against the line.  Even though I have always wanted to stay hooked.

You have been so gracious with me, Lord.  Gently reeling me closer.  Letting me run against the drag. Until I get tired.  And realize what I have been running from is really what I have desperately needed to be running toward.

Fishermen are notorious for their patience.  And the best anglers know there’s no substitute for the right equipment.  Old, abraided line will break every time.  Trophies are lost for less.

You are the Fisherman of fisherman, Lord!  Patient beyond reason.  With the lightest hold on us…

“Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me… for My yoke is easy and My burden is light…”  (Matthew 11:29-30)

… and the most unbreakable Grip.

“I give them Eternal Life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of My hand.”  (John 10:28)

Of course, the bass I lost would have ended up on my dinner plate.  🙂  Those You love — who are willing turn to You — end up as Your dinner guests.

“Here I am!  I stand at the door and knock.  If anyone hears My Voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with him, and he with Me.”  (Revelation 3:20)

I’m here, Lord… one who didn’t get away!   Now and forever… thanks to You!  🙂
