It’s a joke. About a man who was “sizing You up,” Lord.
He asked, “How long is a million years to You?” You said, “A million years is like a second.” The man then asked, “How much is a million dollars to You?” You answered, “A million dollars is like a penny.”
The man smiled and asked, “Could You spare a penny?” You smiled back and said, “Sure, just wait a second.”
Hilarious! I can almost hear You saying that, Lord… and laughing out loud! 🙂
But behind every joke is some seed of Truth… right? This one reminds me of one of my favorite passages in Your Word. A passage about how You think… and what You can do.
“As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:9)
Just how high are Your ways and thoughts, Lord?
I am reading The Circle Maker by Mark Batterson… and You are blowing my mind! He cites some statistics about how very high — and very big — the heavens are.
The heavens You created.
Light travels 186,000 miles per second. In one minute, that’s 11 million miles. In one day, 160 billion miles. In one year, light travels 5 trillion, 865 billion, 696 million miles.
That’s just one light-year! And according to astrophysicists, the outer edge of the universe is 15.5 billion light-years away!
Unimaginable!!!
“Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine… to Him be glory… !” (Ephesians 3:20)
All of this is the backdrop to The Question behind our prayers. It’s The Question You ask each one of us… isn’t it, Lord? As a way of inviting us to pray in ways that are worthy of Your Glory.
“Is there a limit to My power?
How would I pray, Lord, if I really believed that Your power is 15.5 billion light years greater than my biggest need or dream? Greater than anything I could ask or imagine?
It is never a question of whether or not You can… is it, Lord? It is always only a question of whether or not You will. And knowing You can does something to our confidence when we lift anything to You in prayer.
Especially when we sense, by Your Spirit, that we are praying in sync with Your heart for us. Your plans for us.
“This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to His Will, He hears us. And if we know that He hears us — whatever we ask — we know that we have what we asked of Him.” (1 John 5:14-15)
WOW! Why are You — the God of INFINITE POWER — “revving my engines” with such thoughts, Lord? And why now?
Is another “get out of the boat” moment right around the corner???
“For I know the plans I have for you…” (Jeremiah 29:11)
