I just heard an instrumental version of the beautiful classic by that name, Lord.  I hadn’t heard the words in many years… but they came right back to me.

And all I could think of was You!

“Strangers in the night…”

Isn’t that how it always is, Lord?  Whenever any one of us truly encounters You?  In that special moment when we realize the two of us are destined to become one?

You were a stranger to me… but I was no stranger to You.

“I have loved you with an Everlasting Love, I have drawn you with Unfailing Kindness.”  (Jeremiah 31:3)

I was certainly in darkness that day.  The darkness of my sin — blacker than night.

“I am the Light of the World.  Whoever follows Me will never walk in darkness, but will have the Light of Life.”  (John 8:12)

Was the song also right about our loneliness, Lord?

“… two lonely people, we were strangers in the night…”

I had met the earthly Love-of-My-Life and had many friends.  On the surface, everything looked great. But deep down, there was an emptiness — a loneliness — I had tried to fill with everything that could never work.

You were lonely, too… weren’t You, Lord?  You had made me for intimacy with You.  And You had been longing to consummate that intimacy since before You created all that is.

“For He chose us in Him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in His sight.  In love, He predestined us for adoption… in accordance with the pleasure of His will.”  (Ephesians 1:4-5)

Then, in one moment, everything changed.

“… the moment when we said our first hello…”

And that empty place in me recognized it had been waiting for You all along.

“Love was just a glance away… and ever since that night, we’ve been together…”

To my dismay, I have not always been faithful, Lord… but You have.  And You always will be.  The enemy of my soul — the Adversary — will work hard to separate me from You.  But, by Your Grace, he will never succeed!

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”  (Romans 8:38-39)

“Lovers at first sight, in love forever.”

You had actually been wooing me for a long time.  But there came that day when You finally got through to me.  When I finally saw You.  And there was no going back.

“One thing I do know.  I was blind but now I see!”  (John 9:25)

I can’t help but sigh deeply at the song’s final, profound truth:

“It turned out so right, for strangers in the night.”

What an understatement!   🙂

Loving You more today than yesterday,

Abba’s Girl
