Speak Life!

Heart disease is the Number One Killer in this nation.  Is it any wonder?  Words are clues.  Clues to the heart.

“… for his mouth speaks from that which fills his heart.”  (Luke 6:45)

I have heard a lot of “I statements” lately.  Statements that come out of one heart…

I wish…  I want…  I long…  I ache…  I take…  I wound…  I hate…  I hide…  I flee…  I can’t… I won’t… I dare not.

… or another heart…

I kneel…  I know… I submit…  I follow…  I come…  I care…  I serve…  I heal…  I protect…  I can…  I must…  I will.

“Search me, God, and know my heart; test me and know my anxious thoughts.  See if there is any offensive way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”  (Psalm 139:23-24)

Sticks and stones may break bones, but words can break hearts.  Other words — the Living Word — can put them back together.

“The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me, because the Lord has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor.  He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted…”  (Isaiah 61:1a,b)

I heard so many words today, Lord.  Words from broken hearts and from heart breakers and, by Your Grace, from heart menders, too.  And all from within Your Church!  Wounding the healthy.  Shooting the wounded.  “Truth” spoken “lovingly” with a 2 by 4.  Can you feel the “love”?  Maybe when (if) you regain consciousness… ???  More words to rationalize (a.k.a. “telling rational lies”) and justify (a.k.a. “making the crooked straight”).

“Watch over your heart with all diligence, for from it flow the springs of life.”  (Proverbs 4:23)

Precious Lord… In recent days, You have shown me Your heartache and Your heartbreak for us, whenever we fall for the enemy’s tricks.  Yet You have also filled me with HOPE — the promise of Your unfailing RESOLVE to do for us what we cannot do for ourselves.

“Be alert and of sober mind.  Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.  Resist him, standing firm in the faith…  And the God of all grace, who called you to His eternal glory in Christ, after you have suffered a little while, will Himself restore you and make you strong, firm and steadfast.”

Meanwhile, Lord, have mercy on us!  In Your grace, give us ears to hear what we say as Your Church.  Give us ears to hear the enemy’s whispers when he tempts us to speak words of death.  And fill our hearts, instead, with WORDS of LIFE!  Words from Your heart, to (and through) our hearts, to every heart around us!!!
