Running on Fumes

We pulled into a gas station yesterday.  We had only fifty miles of fuel range left.  This was the only diesel in town.  Our last chance to avoid running out of fuel and being stranded.

As we neared the pump, a guy ran up alongside our truck on the driver’s side.  We backed up a little, to get closer to the pump. He continued to run alongside us.

What is he doing?” I wondered.  “Is there a problem?” I asked.

No,” he answered.  “You’re great right there.”  Then, he proceeded to fill our tank!

Turned out this was truly a service station.  He pumped our diesel.  He cleaned our windshield.  He took our credit card inside to run the charge.  I hadn’t experienced this in years!

Suddenly, You “popped” a thought into my head.  (There You go again, “Pops”!)   🙂

We live in a SELF-made, SELF-taught, SELF-sufficient, SELF-serve world.  But You came to change all that… didn’t You, Lord?

“Whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must be your slave — just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give His life as a ransom for many.”  (Matthew 20:26-28)

By design and calling, we Christ-followers are to do the same — to serve as You did (and do).  I guess the question prompted by today’s service station experience is:  Are we?

It’s an important question.  Because maybe — no, most certainly — someone will soon be coming around our next “corner” in life, running on “fumes.”

Will we be their last chance to “fuel up”… with You, Lord?  The King of kings and Lord of lords?  The Fuel of fuels?

“You are the light of the world… let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.”  (Matthew 5:14a,16)

Hopefully…

Expectantly…
