Running On Empty… ???

What is the technology equivalent of fumes, Lord? Like when a car’s fuel tank is almost empty and it’s running on fumes? When the yellow light silently screams its warning from the dashboard that we’ve just about reached the end of our rope?

That’s the state of my cell phone right now. My iPhone 7, barely 18 months old.

It won’t recharge. I have tried two indoor chargers and one car charger. None of them work. So it’s clearly an issue with my phone. And it’s down to 8% battery life remaining.

The nearest Apple store is two hours away. Another joy of living in the country, a.k.a. the boondocks.  🙂 That’s tomorrow’s objective. Find that store… and hope the fix is immediate.

I don’t dare use it anymore, without any way to recharge it. So I did the only thing I could. I turned it off. Making it useless. Incapable of fulfilling the purpose(s) for which it was created.

No… making or receiving phone calls… sending or receiving emails and/or texts… checking my online calendar… accessing my contacts… tracking my cycling workouts (distance, speed, calories burned)…

Then it hit me. Couldn’t the same be said for me, Lord?

Whenever I’m running on fumes? Whenever I’m not effectively plugged into the only Source Who can really empower me to fulfill the purpose(s) for which I was created?

My cell phone also has my Daily Audio Bible app. And my 1,300+ worship songs. I missed them today, but thankfully I had my well-worn NIV Bible and my NKJV Chronological Bible at my fingertips. And it’s Sunday, so we also had the blessing of corporate worship and communion.

But even “disciplines” like these can become rote if we’re not careful… can’t they, Lord? And going through these motions doesn’t mean we are really plugging into You… does it, Lord? At least, not enough to really fuel us for the myriad terrains we encounter in each day’s travels…

How long can the human body survive without food? Experts differ, saying a lot depends on your size, hydration and activity. With ready access to water, some might survive up to two months.  https://www.livestrong.com/article/523013-how-many-days-can-you-survive-without-food/

But without water? Only three to five days. One week, tops.  http://www.thewaterpage.com/live-without-water.htm

Most of us, at least in the USA, rarely do without adequate food and water. So why are we so prone to let the “cares of life” — daily demands and/or distractions — render us malnourished and dehydrated spiritually?

Or is it just me?

“I am the Bread of Life. Whoever comes to Me will never go hungry, and whoever believes in Me will never be thirsty.” (John 6:35)

“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End. To the thirsty I will give water without cost from the spring of the water of Life… Let the one who is thirsty come, and let the one who wishes take the free gift of the water of Life.”  (Revelation 21:6,17)

Battery low? No charging cable necessary. Just… come.

Here I am, Lord.
