Praying For Prison Breaks!

“What are you looking at?” my friend exclaimed.  “An answer to prayer!!!”

I had passed that house countless times on the way to and from Charlottesville.  It was located at a busy intersection.  A great place with a lot of visibility and easy access for drive-in clientele.

A psychic.  Advertising divination by tarot cards and palm reading and fortune telling.

Every time I passed that house, You reminded me to pray, Lord.  That You would close down that operation… and open up the owner’s heart and mind.  So she could “read” and truly understand the significance of Your nail-scarred palms.  And find the fortune You foretold to all who would open their hearts to You.

“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”  (Joel 2:32)

“No eye has seen, no ear has heard, no mind has conceived what God has prepared for those who love Him.”  (1 Corinthians 2:9)

Today, we drove past that house on the way to the monthly meeting of my women’s networking group.  My eyes registered the change almost before my brain could process it.  My double-take was so pronounced, I turned completely around as we whizzed by.

The house was empty!  The signage was gone!  The business was obviously closed down!

How many times had I passed by — prayed by — that house in the past three years, Lord?  But it wasn’t just my prayers.  How many thousands of your people had passed by, on how many thousands of days, lifting up how many thousands of prayers?

“The prayers of the righteous are powerful and effective.”  (James 5:16)

What an encouragement, Lord!!!

I found out later what had happened to that “spiritual entrepreneur.”  She is in prison.  Convicted of defrauding her customers out of their money.

But she was already in prison… wasn’t she, Lord?  Chasing after counterfeits?

“Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world.”  (1 John 4:1)

But You specialize in busting people out of prison… don’t You, Lord?

“… the Lord has anointed Me to proclaim good news to the poor.  He has sent Me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners…”  (Isaiah 61:1-2)

So I’ll keep praying… whenever I pass that now empty house.  Praying that its former (and future) owners will be filled to overflowing with all that is most precious to You, Lord.

“And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, may have power, together with all the Lord’s people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge — that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.”  (Ephesians 3:17-19)
