Our Humpty Dumpty Moments

Some people dwell on the past because they are “stuck” there.

They can remember a time when their life went “off the rails” and ground to a screeching halt.  Maybe it even crashed and burned.  And although “life went on” for them, it isn’t what you could really define as LIFE.

Because no matter where they are (or they refuse to go)… no matter what they attempt (or avoid)… no matter who they hope to be (or resign themselves to be)… they are still at The Crash Site.  Smelling the lingering smoke.  Feeling  the singe of the flames.  Grieving all that was broken that day.  Longing to rewrite history.  Knowing it can’t be done.

OR CAN IT?

We have all had our Humpty Dumpty Moments.  Where our “falls” in life left us shattered into more pieces than we could count or even find.  We may have marshaled all the “troops” we could locate… and/or dug deep to unleash our own “bootstrap-pulling” Self-Help Strength.

We may have even produced a Reassembled and/or Re-engineered and/or Reinvented version of ourselves  in such a way that we could at least inch forward, even with a limp.

Been there.  Done that.

“All the king’s horses and all the king’s men couldn’t put Humpty Dumpty back together again.”

Maybe he was looking for help from the wrong king.  I know I was… for decades.

Thankfully, by Your Grace, I discovered a priceless Truth:  There is a King who specializes in Impossible Cases!

“The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on Me, because the Lord has anointed Me to proclaim good news to the poor.  He has sent Me to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor…

… to comfort all who mourn… to bestow on them a crown of beauty instead of ashes, the oil of joy instead of mourning, and a garment of praise instead of a spirit of despair…”  (Isaiah 61:1-3)

You are that King, Jesus!  The KING of kings… who offers an eternal supply of ALL of the above!!!   🙂

But in the here-and-now, it’s easy to get discouraged sometimes. There’s a relentlessness to the battles we inevitably face.  A relentlessness that “excites” our longing for that future Day when the struggles will be over and the eternal Victory Celebration will begin.  It’s times like those that we need to know where to run… so we can rest, even for a moment.

“Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.  Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.  For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.”  (Matthew 11:28-30)

We all need times of physical and emotional rest and refreshment.  AND we all need much more… don’t we, Lord?

We need to deepen our intimacy with You, so You can heal us, deliver us, and lead us along the path You have marked out for us.

Intimacy through which You can — and will — change us in ways that are far greater than whatever the world’s best wisdom can do.  Intimacy through which You can — and will — lift us to heights that are far beyond the length of our own “boot straps.”

“[Jesus] is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work within us…”  (Ephesians 3:20)

You renew our minds with Your Truth.  You strengthen our resolve by clarifying and affirming Your Calling.  You inspire our courage and empower us by Your Spirit.  And as You do all this and so much more, You do not just “put us back together” again…

You make us better than ever before!

“They will be called oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of His splendor.”  (Isaiah 61:3b)

There’s a time and a place for nursery rhymes.  But what time is it now, Lord?

Time to grow up.

Because until that Day of Celebration comes, we must take — and hold — our place on the battlefield.

“Therefore, dear friends, since you have been forewarned, be on your guard so that you may not be carried away by the error of the lawless and fall from your secure position.  But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.  To Him be glory both now and forever!”  (2 Peter 3:17-18)
