One Third of One Second

That’s how long it takes the human eye to blink.  Just 300-400 milliseconds out of the 1,000 milliseconds that occur in one second.

For some, it’s the time it takes to leave this world and enter… The Next.

Like whoever was traveling in the Jeep we passed today on the Interstate. The Jeep that had briefly gone airborne a quarter mile ahead of us in the 70-mph traffic flow.  The Jeep that came to rest upside down on the shoulder of the highway.

In one third of one second.  The blink of an eye.

How many milliseconds was it, Lord, before we sped by… caught in the far left lane in traffic that flowed by the accident without any chance of pulling over?

How many milliseconds was it, Lord, before my fingers hit 911?  How many milliseconds passed before You pointed my gaze to an exit sign so I could precisely identity where emergency help was needed?

One third of one second.  The blink of an eye.

That’s how quickly Life can change direction… isn’t it, Lord?  And how quickly Life can end altogether.  No one plans for such things.  No one imagines that such things are even possible.  Yet today, it was not only possible…it was REAL.

In one third of one second.  The blink of an eye.

I don’t know how many were in that car, Lord.  But You do.  I can’t imagine anyone survived that impact.  But miracles happen all the time with You around, Lord!

And sometimes, they don’t.

So it pays to be ready… doesn’t it, Lord?  Because we never know (in advance) when the unthinkable could happen to us

… in one third of one second.  The blink of an eye.

Because whatever comes next lasts a whole lot longer.

“Seek the Lord while He may be found; call on Him while He is near.  Let the wicked forsake their ways and the unrighteous their thoughts.  Let them turn to the Lord, and He will have mercy on them, and to our God, for He will freely pardon.”  (Isaiah 55:6-7)

“‘Jesus answered, ‘I am The Way and The Truth and The Life.  No one comes to the Father except through Me.”  (John 14:6)

“Surely Your goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life, and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.”  (Psalm 23:6)

Still praying, with Hope, for those who still have time…
