Miracle in 4D!

There it was… a five-month old baby.

Squirming, turning, yawning… in its mother’s womb!   Still months away from leaving its “cocoon” to be held in mommy’s arms.  But clearly a baby, alive and kicking!

A wonder-full, living Miracle in 4D!  A high-tech ultrasound clip posted on Facebook. AMAZING!!!  Yet the hundreds of comments it provoked were what drew me in.

Expressions of wonder and praise to You, Lord, for the Miracle of Life.  Expressions of grief for the loss of such life through abortion.  Expressions defending a woman’s “right to choose.”  Expressions bemoaning a baby’s choice denied.

Comments that were… Heartwarming.  Heartbreaking.  Thrilling.  Even chilling.

I saw much Truth there, Lord, spoken in love.  Yet also many lies, stoked by… hatred. Even from those who called themselves Christians.

Maybe they haven’t heard about Your “hard Truths,” Lord.  Truths that turn worldly reason upside-down.

“Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven.”  (Matthew 5:44-45a)

It is so much easier to hate our enemies, Lord.  And isn’t that often the “appropriate” emotion for the moment?  The  “righteous” emotion for the moment, given the enormity of the evil we see others commit?

“A new command I give you:  Love one another.  As I have loved you, so you must love one another.”  (John 13:34)

Yes, Lord… But some people are beyond loving, aren’t they?  How can You expect us to love those whose sin against You is so great???

“You hypocrite, first take the plank out of your own eye, and then you will see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.”  (Matthew 7:5)

But Lord!  Surely my sin must be only a “speck” compared to the PLANK I see in other people!

“… by the grace given me I say to every one of you:  Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment…”  (Romans 12:3)

Yes, but… Isn’t there a “red line” to be drawn, Lord?  A line that love cannot, in good conscience, ever cross?

“But God demonstrates His own love for us in this:  While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.”  (Romans 5:8)

A red line, indeed.

One comment chilled me to the bone.  A comment directed at a post-abortive woman…. by a self-proclaimed Christian.

“I hope you spend eternity in hell.”

I will be forever grateful, Lord, that Your mercy far exceeds that of even Your own people.  I know that comment pierced more than that woman’s heart.  It pierced Your heart, too… didn’t it, Lord?

I flashed back to the moment I first realized You had whispered my name from Your Cross.

You were hanging there, bleeding from the wounds I helped put in You with my countless sins.  Even the terrible sin of abortion.  And there You were, asking Abba:

“Father, forgive [Diana], for [she] did not know what [she] was doing.”  (Luke 23:34)

With love for me that was (is) wide and long and high and deep.  Another Miracle in 4D.

Love that makes me forever grateful… and forever Yours.
