Lover of My Soul

What do I know about INTIMACY, Lord?

As one whose innocence was taken from her at a tender age, I became “fluent” in another language altogether.  A language that had no such word to convey the essence of a close, familiar, affectionate, loving, personal relationship with another. My fluent “Heart Speak” embodied, instead, the essence of other words.

Horror.  Hiding.  Hatred.  Helpless.  Hopeless.  Hell on Earth (to name but a few).

“The cords of death entangled me, the torrents of destruction overwhelmed me.  The cords of the grave encircled around me; the snares of death confronted me.”  (Psalm 18:4-5)

When did I begin to believe there could be more?  When You showed up, Lord, with that gleam in Your eye.  An Eye I couldn’t yet see in a Head I didn’t yet know and a Heart I couldn’t yet feel.  But an Eye, nevertheless, whose gleam began to pierce the darkness all around me.  And as the Light came forth, I began to think — to hope — it was possible to find more.

Relief.  Refuge.  Redemption.  Restoration.  Radiance.  Rejoicing (to name but a few).

“He reached down from on high and took hold of me; He drew me out of deep waters.  He rescued me from my powerful enemy; from my foes, who were too strong for me… He rescued me because He delighted in me.”  (Psalm 18:16-19)

How do walls turn into windows, Lord… and then, into welcomes?  What does it take for a heart of stone to become flesh?  When do escapes cease so embraces can begin?  How does one heal all the way from Indignation to Indifference to Intimacy?

“Now to Him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to His power that is at work in us, to Him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus forever and ever.  Amen.”  (Ephesians 3:20)

What do I know about INTIMACY?  Everything You have taught me, Lord.  Everything I have experienced in Your Powerful Presence.  Everything Unexpected.  Undeniable.  Impossible.  Irrevocable.

“My soul yearns, even faints, for the courts of the Lord; my heart and my flesh cry out for the living God… Better is one day in Your courts than a thousand elsewhere…”  (Psalm 84:2,10)

What do I still need to know about INTIMACY?  So much more!   So, have Your way, Lord.

“The Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does He withhold from those whose walk is blameless.  Lord Almighty, blessed is the one who trusts in You.”  (Psalm 84:11-12)

I do trust You, Lord.  And I want to trust You so much more!

Letting go, more today than yesterday…
