Lord of Purr-fection!

How could I have lived for so long, Lord — more than half of the years I could reasonably “guesstimate” I would live on Earth — and not realize I was a closet cat-lover???  I guess because I never was one… before Skippy.

Maybe it was the timing of her sudden appearance some eight years ago, or the circumstances surrounding that appearance.  Who could have resisted the scared, sweet face of that obviously abandoned kitty?  Maybe it was the way Skippy so quickly and completely captured our hearts (as the parents she chose to adopt).  Not to mention the heart of Mindy, our precious dog (who Skippy immediately adopted as her older sister).

Maybe it was Skippy’s quirky personality — a cat who clearly thinks she is a dog and follows us everywhere (unlike other cats I have known, who maintained a dispassionate aloofness that bordered on disdain).  Maybe it’s her internal purr-machine that revs into a noisy overdrive whenever I pet her (or hug her or talk to her).  Maybe it’s a thousand other things, large and small.

Or maybe — just maybe — it’s because You, Lord, changed my heart of stone toward cats into a heart of flesh… or is it melted butter?  🙂

“I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you your heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh.  And I will put My Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees…”  (Ezekiel 36:26-27)

That’s what You love to do… isn’t it, Lord?  You pour out Your love on us with unrestrained generosity and joy.  Orchestrating our steps in the way You know we should go. Seeing whatever hole we have in our hearts and bringing forth the perfect — in this case, purr-fect — way You desire to fill it.  And suddenly, something — or in this case, someone — who would have otherwise been invisible to us, becomes a priceless treasure.

“For no one is cast off by the Lord forever.  Though He brings grief, He will show compassion, so great is His unfailing love.  For He does not willingly bring affliction or grief to anyone.”  (Lamentations 3:31-33)

Oh, Abba… How we need for You to “split” these “vessels” of ours wide open, so we can truly understand — and respond to — Your love!

“I pray that out of His glorious riches He may strengthen you with power through His Holy Spirit in your inner being… And I pray that  you, being rooted and established in love, may have power together with all the Lord’s holy people, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, and to know this love that surpasses knowledge — that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God.” (Ephesians 3:16-19)

Purr-fectly content, in the warmth of Your love…
