I Said It… But I Didn’t Really Mean It

Lord, Lord, Lord… These are times that try — i.e., test, challenge — our souls like never before.

As a culture, we have been drifting (running?) away from You for decades. Our values (and hearts) shifting away from what You hold dear so we can embrace what we desire apart from You.

Why are we surprised when we see what fills our headlines — and breaks our hearts — on a daily basis?

I recently talked with a dear brother in Christ. A pastor, actually. He was discussing one of the major shifts taking place in our culture. An issue of sexuality.. and how to find unity where there is division.

He said something that rocked me to the core.

He suggested the way to unity was via compromise. Between those who see the Bible as literal and those who see it as metaphor. As if, by looking at Your Word as metaphor, we could accept — even justify — this particular culture shift.

Lord, why would You speak some words so clearly — and so often — if You didn’t really mean them? I don’t see how they can possibly be misunderstood. So the only way around them is to say You didn’t really mean them.

Or perhaps You meant them once, but today is a New Day?

Please answer me this, Beloved:

If truth is considered relative, who will ever seek You, Jesus — The Truth, The Way, The Life?

If “our truth” is really a lie, how can it yield anything but harm?

If evil is considered good (and vice versa), what will become of those who love You… and hate You?

If we must dilute or reject Your Word to justify our ways, who are we really fooling… and/or hurting?

If brokenness is believed to be wholeness, who will seek healing? Or You, The Great Physician?

If slavery is whitewashed as freedom, who will seek deliverance? Or You, The Deliverer?

If sin is redefined as acceptable (even celebrated), who will seek redemption? Or You, The Redeemer?

If “love” is “anything goes, with anyone, anytime”… who will ever recognize and receive Your Love?

As night enfolds this day with rest, I’m gratefully taking my favorite sleeping aid…

“Do not let this Book of the Law depart from your mouth; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.”  (Joshua 1:8)

“In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God… The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the One and Only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”  (John 1:1,14)

“Whoever has My commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves Me. He who loves me will be loved by My Father, and I too will love him and show Myself to him.”  (John 14:21)

Sweet dreams, Lord… thanks always to You.
