Heavenly Ache

Oh, Lord… I heard a song today that I have loved for many years.  Whenever I hear it, it touches me in a place too deep to fully understand or describe.  Without fail, it brings me to tears from the very depths of my soul and spirit.

Because each phrase touches a profound ache.  A place of longing in me for every “Yes… but not yet” in Your Word.

I cling to Your precious promises, Lord.  So many have become real to me as I have, by Your Grace, experienced them.  But only in part.  Isn’t that the way it must be here, Lord? This is Earth, after all… not Heaven.

“For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face.  Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known.”  (1 Corinthians 13:12)

What is this deep ache, Lord?  This ache that, when touched, brings tears of such longing? Is it the ache we all have for Home?  For Life to be as You always intended?

The ache for the fullness of all that is sure to come… but not yet?

“As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for You, my God.”  (Psalm 42:1)

That song reignited so many memories…

… the times I have seen beyond my eyes to the place of “impossible” dreams.

“… with God all things are possible.”  (Matthew 19:26)

… the places where, even in my weakest state, I have faced and fought “unbeatable” foes.

“My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.”  (2 Corinthians 12:9)

… the times when I have been called to bear what, in my flesh, was unbearable.

“Consider Him who endured such opposition from sinners, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.”  (Hebrews 12:3)

… the places to which I have run, where those braver than me dared not go.

“… on this rock I will build My church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it.”  (Matthew 16:18)

This is the Quest You have placed before all of us, Lord.  Inviting us…

… to follow You, the Morning Star.  No matter how hopeless the way may seem.  No matter how dark and far the road appears.

… to fight for what You, Lord, have declared is right and good.

… to do so without question or pause.

… to be willing to march even into the gates of hell because Your cause is heavenly and Your kingdom is meant to come to Earth.

How can we remain faithful and true to this Quest, Lord… apart from Your Grace?

“To Him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before His glorious presence without fault and with great joy — to the only God our Savior be glory, majesty, power and authority through Jesus Christ our Lord, before all ages, now and forevermore!”  (Jude 24-25)

Meanwhile, we dream and fight.  Holding fast.  Held fast.

Because in every ache… is Hope.
