Grateful for Your Green Thumb!

Crops have a cycle… don’t they, Lord?

We’re getting ready to plant our garden.  Some corn, beans, cucumbers, tomatoes, squash.  Nothing major… just, we hope, delicious.

We’re starting a month earlier than last year, but already we’re thinking we’re… behind.  The rain these last two days has set us back yet again.  We have to till the clay ground and add topsoil and manure before we can even get the seeds in the ground. The corn “gurus” say:  “Knee high by the Fourth of July.”  Really?

Maybe with a healthy dose of Miracle Grow…  🙂

Then I got to wondering.  What about spiritual crops, Lord?

What is the cycle of growth You hope to nurture in Your children, so that we will grow to maturity?  What enhances the magnitude of the harvest You can bring forth through us?  What hinders it?

How much tilling must be done to loosen the hard ground within us and remove the rocks?  Why does it take “manure” to add such richness to our soil?  What unique fertilizers do You painstakingly apply, to maximize the return on Your investment in us… when are each so one-of-a-kind special?

How “high” should we be by the Fourth of July… or any date of Your choosing that signals our likelihood of producing desirable fruit before our growing season is over?  Not too little or too late…

It can’t be anything other than Your special brand of Miracle Gro… can it, Lord?  That, plus Your perfectly Green Thumb!

“… for it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfill His good purpose.”  (Philippians 2:13)

You use a different analogy in Your Word, Lord, but it is clear that maturity matters to You:

“… though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the elementary truths of God’s word all over again.  You need milk, not solid food!  Anyhone who lives on milk, being still an infant, is not acquainted with the teaching about righteousness.  But solid food is for the mature, who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil.”  (Hebrews 5:12-14)

We are just at the tilling stage in our garden, for the very first time.  But You and I, Lord?  We are at that same stage in me again…as we have been many, many times.  This time, digging deeper than ever before.  I say, “Till away, Lord!”  There’s nothing I want more than to be fertile soil, producing a rich harvest for You.

Basking in Your Sonlight, soaking in Your Living Water, welcoming Your “Green” Touch…
