God, my Fortress & my Freedom…

Some walls are meant to be… others are not.

You had me camped out in the book of Nehemiah this morning, reading about the rebuilding of the walls around Jerusalem after the long exile of the Israelites in Babylon.  Before I began to read out loud, I prayed that You would use Your Word this morning to speak to me — to change me — and the very atmosphere here.  You did not disappoint me.

“For the Word of God is alive and active.  Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart.”  (Hebrews 4:12)

The testimony of Nehemiah records how vital the job was — restoring the protective wall around Jerusalem, still surrounded by her enemies — and how vital everyone’s role was.  This immense task could not have been accomplished by just a few; it was accomplished (in 52 days!) because the entire remnant came together as one, with each person working zealously — with all their heart — to do their part.

Isn’t that just as true today, Lord… for the remnant You have called for such a time as this?

“Your people will rebuild the ancient ruins and will raise up the age-old foundations; you will be called Repairer of Broken Walls, Restorer of Streets with Dwellings.”  (Isaiah 58:12)

So many protective walls — the ones that should be in place — are in disrepair today.  Walls meant to keep enemies out have, instead, been broken… letting enemies in.  Marriages are divided.  Families are divided.  Your Church is divided.  Communities are divided.  Our nation is more divided than ever.

“If a house is divided against itself, that house cannot stand.”  (Mark 3:25)

Thank You, Lord, that You are waking up — and raising up — Your Remnant in our day to rebuild these broken walls! Thank You that You are instilling in us the understanding of how vital our individual (and collective) roles are!  Thank You, Lord, that You are filling us with the passion to zealously pursue — with all of our hearts — the fulfillment of those roles!  Thank You, Lord, that we can place all of our confidence in You, knowing that Your plans NEVER FAIL!

“‘Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,’ says the Lord Almighty.'”  (Zechariah 4:6)

But there are other kinds of walls, too… walls not “meant to be.”  Destructive walls erected by the enemy, aided by us whenever we have fallen for his lies.  Walls inside of us.  Walls outside of us.  Walls that set our hearts against You and those we are to love… even our enemies.  And the Solution is the same… isn’t it, Lord?

“My adversaries pursue me all day long… When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.  In God, whose word I praise — in God I trust and am not afraid.”  (Psalm 56:2a,3-4a)

Give us supernatural discernment, Lord.  To know which wall(s) we are facing today.  To know which needs to be built up and which needs to be torn down.  To know our unique role in this work, the role You have ordained for us… and those with whom we are to partner in Your Service.

And then stir us — empower us — to go beyond knowing into doing!!!

“Ii love You, Lord, my Strength!  The Lord is my Rock, my Fortress and my Deliverer; my God is my Rock, in whom I take Refuge, my Shield and the Horn of my Salvation, my Stronghold.”  (Psalm 18:1-2)

Eager to see — and be part of — what You will do…
