Games I Play

I like to win.  Sometimes, it seems, at any cost.  Is that why that now infamous quote stuck with me?  “Winning isn’t everything… it’s the ONLY thing.”

I don’t even like that “truth.”  Maybe because it isn’t a “truth” at all… is it, Lord?  It’s a value statement.  And some values are outright lies.

I discover the Lie in this “truth” whenever I apply it to my own life.  If winning is the only thing, then I will do anything to WIN.  Anything.  No matter what (or who) I hurt.

Even myself.

Because the End becomes worth any Means.  Means like… Cutting Corners.  Cheating.  Changing the Rules.  Deceiving Others.

Deceiving Myself.

What is “winning” anyway?

If I’m not making the grade, I just change the scoring system.  If the “race” seems too hard, I postpone the start-date to the Tomorrow that never comes.  If the “win” seems impossibly elusive, I stop wanting that “win” and desire another outcome altogether.  One I know I can achieve.

These were the thoughts on my mind in this morning’s pre-dawn hours.  The perfect time when Your Light could shatter their darkness.  Even as the Dawn would soon do the same with my night.

With the rising sun… and The Rising Son!

There is only one WIN that really counts… isn’t there, Lord?  The Win above all other wins!  To gain The Prize above all other prizes!

“For God so loved the world that He gave His One and Only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have Eternal Life.”  (John 3:16)

“… to all who did receive Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become children of God…”  (John 1:12)

And there’s only One Way to win this Priceless Prize.

“I am The Way and The Truth and The Life.  No one comes to the Father except through Me.”  (John 14:6)

It’s a “Game” we can’t possibly win… except for You, Lord.  You wrote The Rules.  So only You can fulfill them… perfectly.

“Who then can be saved?  Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.'”  (Matthew 19:26)

“God made Him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God.”  (2 Corinthians 5:21)

So what is required of us?  To cease being spectators!  Choose to get off the stands and into The Game!

“And everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”  (Joel 2:32)

“Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles.  And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith.”  (Hebrews 12:1-2)

Oh-so-grateful to be on Your Team, Lord…

… growing beyond my weaknesses…

… thanks to Your unceasing Grace and Help!!!

“… being confident of this, that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.”  (Philippians 1:6)
