Does Shouting = Solving?

Part of the Affordable Care Act (“Obamacare”) has been challenged by Christian business owners. In particular, those seeking an exemption from what has been called the Abortion Pill Mandate.

The Mandate requires businesses to provide employees with health coverage that includes abortion-inducing drugs. Whether or not the business owners have a faith-based objection.

But the highest court in the land – the U.S. Supreme Court – ruled in favor of closely-held businesses whose Christian owners have religious objections to this provision. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Burwell_v._Hobby_Lobby_Stores,_Inc.

Leading the victors to shout for joy!

But a different kind of shout emerged recently from one highly-successful business owner. Who exercised her vast influence in support of abortion.

Oprah Winfrey.

A significant business owner in her own right. With a vast media empire and a net worth estimated at more than one billion dollars. Oprah calls herself a Christian, and attributes her success to spirituality. But not everyone is convinced.

With good reason.

Oprah recently used the “Inspiration” section of her “O” magazine to feature Amelia Bonow, founder of the “Shout Your Abortion” movement.

You heard me. “Shout Your Abortion.” Urging women to brag about aborting their unborn babies. Bonow shares in “O” magazine how it all began:

“When I found out that the House of Representatives had voted to defund Planned Parenthood, I kind of unraveled. I opened Facebook and, without thinking, wrote, ‘Like a year ago, I had an abortion at Planned Parenthood… and I remember this experience with a nearly inexpressible level of gratitude.’ I hit Post… and everything changed.”

A friend shared Bonow’s post on Twitter with the hashtag #ShoutYourAbortion. And the movement began. Their website gives their “why”…

Every single day, all sorts of people have abortions, for every reason you can imagine. We are your siblings, your coworkers, your spouses and your friends. Abortion helps people live their best lives. We are the proof. And we’re only going to get louder.   https://shoutyourabortion.com/about/

Bonow contends the “anti-choice” movement tries to silence post-abortive women, to be terrified to speak the truth. But is this assertion true?

The Silent No More Awareness Campaign is one example of many pro-life storytelling outreaches. Their charter is to “reach out to people hurt by abortion, encouraging them to attend abortion after-care programs. Invite those who are ready to break the silence to join us in speaking the truth about abortion’s negative consequences and the hope found in healing.”   http://www.silentnomoreawareness.org/

And organizations like SMART Women’s Healthcare – Science Matters in Abortion-Related Trauma — serve women and lawmakers with research and education.

“We believe women have the right to know and receive full disclosure of all lifelong risk factors of their reproductive decisions, including abortion trauma.  We commit to putting science and worldwide empirical research over ideology so that women can make fully informed reproductive decisions impacting their lifelong healthcare. Abortion is trauma.”  https://smartwomenshealthcare.science/

How can authentic Christian business owners steward their influence to impact this controversy in Christ-honoring ways?
