Beam Me Up, Scotty?!

I love the tag line AT&T came up with years ago, touting the benefits of the telephone in connecting loved ones separated by long distances: “It’s the next best thing to being there.” I guess for us, Lord, that tag line refers to prayer… right? Without a landline or cell phone in sight. Without a Facebook post or Tweet at our fingertips. Just our hearts connecting with Yours in the split second we turn our focus to You. [Deep sigh.]  🙂 Tonight, I’m taking another step in this blog space… by learning to go Video! I don’t know all You have planned for this, Lord… but today is a starting point…. Read more »

Pretzel Thinking

Posted by & filed under Seeking Intimacy, Climbing Higher.

Pretzels of the twisted kind.  Thinking of the twisted kind.  I heard it just yesterday.  From those who claim to love You, Lord. Even me…?  Not yesterday, perhaps. But I am certainly not immune… “…watch yourselves, or you also may be tempted.”  (Galatians 6:1) We were talking about events in our day.  How, increasingly, the rhetoric against Christians has turned more hateful.  HATE-FULL.  How words expressed in support of what You have taught us, Lord, are being twisted by minds (and hearts) that are calling… what is evil “Good”… what is wrong, “Right.” I heard one at the table say, “I hate them with all my heart!”  My spirit winced…. Ready for Liftoff!

You are the Master Communicator, Lord!  I know this… yet You never cease to amaze me with Your creativity!  Yesterday, the “medium” You chose for Your message was a… … helicopter??? I was meeting with a dear sister.  We always gather in Your Presence.  And You never disappoint us! Yesterday was “just another day” in the wonder of doing Life with You! “Today is the day the Lord has made.  Let us rejoice and be glad in it!”  (Psalm 118:24) You have stirred her heart with a longing.  A desire to be more intentional about sharing Your Good News in the marketplace. She is a business owner with a great… Read more »

The Power of Divine Suggestion

“I’ve never said that before!  When it came out of my mouth, I wondered: ‘Where did THAT come from???’” He was our guide at the Botanic Garden today in Sydney.  A very nice, very knowledgeable grey-haired man who talked us through a 90-minute free tour.  A fascinating combination of history, anthropology, botany, zoology and sociology. He had made a comment early in our tour.  I could hardly wait until the end so I could ask him about it. On a personal level.  Away from the crowd. What comment had he made?  “Thank the Lord!”  He said it with some enthusiasm, referring to a near-disastrous turn of events that was averted…. Read more »

Rise… And Go In Peace

A “God-Encounter of the Jesus Kind.” It was yesterday, in church.  During communion. We are fairly new to this particular congregation.  Still experiencing the newness of the way communion is celebrated there. Pew by pew, we all walk forward and kneel at the altar in order to be served. We are a large enough congregation that while one row kneels and receives the bread and cup, another row stands behind them. How did this start?  As a “Disney-esque” way to keep the large crowd flowing smoothly and efficiently? Perhaps.  But yesterday, I focused on a new detail.  Each person in the standing row placed a hand on the shoulder of the kneeler in front… Read more »

Questions and More Questions

When you don’t stand for something, you’ll fall for anything. What are we standing for, Lord? What are we willing to risk in the process? What are we falling for? What is our personal “line in the sand”? What happens when the “tide” comes in? Who is the tide? Who is the drought? Who keeps us ignorant? Who makes us wise? Who really cares? Who really counts? Where is our Hope? How will we… heal? Tuesday is Election Day.  Oh, Lord… Have mercy on us! “I lift up my eyes to the mountains — where does my help come from?  My help comes from the Lord, the Maker of heaven… Read more »

No one can deny a “Macro-Miracle” like the parting of the Red Sea, Lord. When Your people were on the verge of destruction.  Backed up against an impenetrable barrier — the Red Sea — with the Egyptian army bearing down on them.  Until You penetrated what was otherwise impenetrable.  And they moved across on dry land! But what about Your “Micro-Miracles,” Lord?  The little things that are also Divinely-orchestrated. Little Gifts that help us become more aware of Your abiding Presence… in even the details of Life. Like the one You gave me this morning!   🙂 I was enjoying a wonderful time of fellowship with You, Lord.  In the… Read more »

Closing the Distance

When was I close enough to touch Your face yesterday, Lord? When I listened to Your Word in the predawn darkness, receiving it — and You, its Author — so gratefully? “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.”  (John 1:1) When I petted my husband’s arm and refused his half-joking encouragement to find someone younger and “better”? “Therefore what God has joined together, let no one separate.”  (Matthew 19:6) When I reassured our baby, Skippy — who was on the way to the kennel — that she is dearly loved? “Let the little children come to Me…”  (Matthew 19:14)  [Even… Read more »

Strangers in The Night

Posted by & filed under Seeking Intimacy, Embracing Love.

I just heard an instrumental version of the beautiful classic by that name, Lord.  I hadn’t heard the words in many years… but they came right back to me. And all I could think of was You! “Strangers in the night…”   Isn’t that how it always is, Lord?  Whenever any one of us truly encounters You?  In that special moment when we realize the two of us are destined to become one? You were a stranger to me… but I was no stranger to You. “I have loved you with an Everlasting Love, I have drawn you with Unfailing Kindness.”  (Jeremiah 31:3) I was certainly in darkness that day.  The… Read more »

The Debt of Love

Posted by & filed under Seeking Intimacy, Climbing Higher.

It was an unexpected reunion. At the timing You chose, Lord.  Because You caused us to cross paths again.  Literally.  Right there on the street.  A brother and sister-in-Christ.  Forever Family. We love each other dearly.  Yet… we now walk separate paths.  I used to sit under his teaching.  Until I began to feel… uneasy.  I truly believe it was You, Lord, warning me that something was not quite right. “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.  Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s Will is — His good, pleasing and perfect Will.”  (Romans 12:2)… Read more »
